The Creative Writing Club at KIPP DC Valor Academy offers middle school students the opportunity to improve their abilities as writers in a positive and nurturing environment.

Led by English Language Arts Special Education teacher Hannah Love, the club’s establishment sprang from the enthusiastic response students had to creative writing when teaching.

Love also hopes to see the club host an Open Mic night for students and continue to get drum up interest for the club and their projects around the school, with parents, and inside the community.

Most importantly, she wants to see her students recognize how impactful writing can be as both a tool of expression and personal development.

The primary aim of the module is to give students the knowledge and understanding to undertake more sustained or sophisticated writing projects, and to hone critical reflection and feedback skills.

The module forms part of the Inside Narratives Pathway but students wishing to study the module on a standalone basis are more than welcome to enrol.

What is the relationship between writers and writing? This practical module introduces students to some of the main genres within the discipline, including the short story, poetry and creative non-fiction through both theory and practice.

Sessions will focus on issues relating to writers and writing as well as participation in writing workshops about writing process, revision, editing and reflection.

Can it be applied to “big picture” elements like plot and theme?

These are the questions we tackle in this episode of the show.
