In 1580, Michel de Montaigne, an outstanding French philosopher, had his collection of short, quite subjective discussions on different topics published. These pieces of writing, in which authors could freely express their own ideas and viewpoints, became extremely popular.

Today, it is hard to imagine the world of literature without essays.

On the contrary, a scientific exposition might be of great literary value and a pedestrian poem of none at all.
